Sensory Overload & ADHD

Updated: Dec 31, 2024

Loud noises, bright lights, and crowded places can be overwhelming for someone with ADHD. It’s like our brains can’t filter out the extra stimuli. Does anyone else need quiet time to recharge?

Understanding Sensory Overload:

1. Heightened Sensitivity: People with ADHD often have heightened sensitivity to sensory input.

2. Difficulty Filtering Stimuli: Our brains may struggle to filter out unnecessary stimuli, leading to overwhelm.

3. Need for Quiet Time: To recharge, those with ADHD often need quiet, calm spaces.

Strategies to Manage Sensory Overload:

1. Create a Calm Space: Designate a quiet, clutter-free area to retreat and reduce sensory overload.

2. Use Noise-Canceling Headphones: Block out distracting sounds with noise-canceling headphones or earplugs.

3. Practice Mindfulness: Engage in mindfulness or meditation exercises to help manage sensory input and reduce stress.

Coaching Benefits:

Coaching can help you develop personalized strategies to manage sensory overload, making daily life more manageable.
